I'd never seen so many French names in my life. Pourciau. Ghere. Prejean. Lasyone.
The French heritage aside, these guys were all pretty friendly. Maybe that was because they were heading home soon. I met them in the way-too-long line to the chow hall. I made some comment like, "this place must be really good if people are lining up for it."
They told me how they felt they were back in the high life on KAF. They had been at FOB Apache, which was closing. They were among the last to man it, and had probably eaten more MREs than they cared to remember.
I always like meeting other National Guard Soldiers, so I found out where they'd be the next day and went to snap some photos of them. SFC Grimes, one of the senior NCOs, was all smiles, and told me I'd probably see a lot more grins from the others.
Although I'm a little jealous that they are leaving, they've definitely earned it. These guys had some of the toughest jobs Soldiers could have.
Well done, guys.
