Live from Kandahar, It's Radio Operations!

Ask anyone who has completed the broadcaster course at DINFOS, and they’ll tell you that radio was among the funnest things they have ever done. (We’re sticking by “funnest” as a word, by the way.)

We’ve continued that fun legacy here in OEF. In the last three weeks, we’ve facilitated four radio interviews with more to come. These are called “media engagements” in our world, and they are important because they let Soldiers tell their own stories to huge audiences back home.

MSgt. Erin McPherson was our first victim participant. She appeared on Crawford Radio’s “Hero of the Week” segment to discuss her work on the airfield. McPherson is a California Air National Guard vocalist in the Air National Guard's Band of the West Coast. Her job in Kandahar is to help "juggle" aircarft, making sure planes are parked properly.

We scored big with the Hugh Hewitt Radio show the next week, which has an audience of several million across the United States. Though his guests had to stay up until (or wake up at) 2:30 am, they were entusiastic and engaged. Hugh happenned to be broadcasting from Colorado, home to 1LT Steve Moon who was promoted earlier that day by his father, LTC Steven Moon.

Line of the day by Hugh: "You don't often hear on the radio, I was headed to Kandahar anyway." Listen to the full segment here: https://soundcloud.com/rich-stowell/two-moons-over-kandahar

CPT Nate Catching was next on Crawford's broadcast, a connection is turning out to be a weekly affair, so folks back home can be reminded that service members are still working as hard as ever here in Afghanistan. Tonight we've lined up an Army reservist from Arizona, who works with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Don't worry, your frienly mobile public affairs detachment knows how to make it happen through the miracle of radio.

It's just as fun as it was at DINFOS!
