Someone You Should Know and the Crazy Life of Army Spouses

In our first blog roll call, we highlighted some funny, homespun Soldier blogs. This week we lead with the heavyweights who have taken their blogging skills to become go-to sites for military news and commentary.

  • Black Five is a comprehensive blog, with posts from an array of writers and on an array of topics. They (the topics) range from discussions of historical military campaigns to reviews of military science fiction literature. One post was a translation of a French ISAF soldier's take on serving with Americans (you might be surprised at his perceptions of the yanks.) One of its best features is a regular and highly-populated category called "Someone You Should Know," which honors the fallen in war. Some of these posts are dedicated to U.S. service members who died in the Global War on Terror. Others look warriors of ages past. Some tell the deeds of civilians who helped the cause of liberty during wartime.

  • The Captain's Journal is a mammoth of a site that competes with Black Five. Thing is, BF has several regular writers, while the good captain is (mostly) all by his lonesome, yet more prolific. TCJ is up to date and chock-full of analysis of current affairs. The captain knows of what he writes, from ISIS to Israel, COIN to the Caucasus. Also, he likes writing about Afghanistan, with 675 posts relating. That's good for us.

  • Some our our readers don't want to know more about Afghanistan and ISIS, and that's fine. Soldier's Wife Crazy Life is for the domestic side of living the Army dream. The latest is a tip about shopping at the commissary. The author also ventures into commentary about our favorite topic, social media!

Being a National Guard spouse is tough, and for the insight that Soldier's Wife offers, we salute her. And for the time she puts into the blog between school, work, shopping, and raising kids, we heap praise and congratulations on her.

To all of those writers who take the time to keep us informed and connected-- write on!
We'll read on!
